Functional Brief
Fujifilm Data Storage University (DSU) Web Site
Full document available for in-person review.

Challenge:
Design a login and registration process with three tiers of user access to an online learning site for IT professionals. To encourage user registration, Fujifilm wanted to restrict access to advanced educational content, the exam-taking functionality and certification opportunities on the site to registered users. Additionally, they planned to initiate a Rewards program for special "Invited Guests" identified and invited by Fujifilm directly. The challenge was to design a login and navigation system allowing restricted access to certain areas of the site while providing a seamless experience for users at all levels.

Solution:
Three user states are specified: "Open," "Regular Login," and "Invited Guest." each with its attendant access privileges and requirements. The Functional Brief also calls for a flexible navigation bar design, in which the link to the "Rewards" section does not appear unless users are logged in as an "Invited Guest." Once logged in, their login state is maintained on all pages of the site.

"Open" users may view all non-restricted site content, and are encouraged to register at appropriate points (for example, at the end of the content for the first course, they are prompted to register if they wish to take the final exam). The site is carefully structured so that they never hit a "dead end" where they are denied access without the option to register and progress. "Regular Login" and "Invited Guest" users, who may take the final exam quizzes, may store their results in their personal profiles, enabling them to progress to future lessons and eventually qualify for a certification program. These users may also update the personal information stored in their profiles at any time.
